    Introduction

Over the past few decades, Bolivia has undergone a significant process of democratization, which has led to notable advances in the political representation of women and indigenous peoples, two historically marginalized groups in the country (Anria, 2018). The 2009 constitution, developed through a participatory process and approved by referendum, officially recognized indigenous rights and autonomy, as well as gender equality, as fundamental values of the state (Postero, 2017). These changes have had important impacts on the inclusion of these groups in the political sphere. However, the extent to which formal representation has translated into substantive influence and transformed underlying power structures remains a complex question. This essay will critically examine how democratization in Bolivia has affected the political participation and representation of women and indigenous minorities. It will argue that while significant progress has been made in increasing the presence of these groups in formal politics, ongoing challenges such as entrenched discrimination, institutional barriers, and limited responsiveness to their priorities persist. At the same time, grassroots mobilization and opportunities for deeper structural reforms offer potential avenues for further advancing inclusion.
